Live Clips

Here are live sound clips of my  EVI.  Please also see my  "non-live" section for other sound samples.  The purpose of this page is to demonstrate to fellow windsynth players and other musicians as to how I use my windsynth rig to make live music.   I have provided a variety of sectional pieces as well as solo pieces.  All of these clips were recorded live.  These are fairly large clips, so if you are on a slow dial-up connection, you might want to pass on downloading these. Special thanks to Sam Zambito and Matt Traum (both superb EVI players) for providing guest clips.

RECENT ADDITIONS

New! Breakin' The Law - This is a clip of a reggae-ish version of Breakin' The Law by Judas Priest that features me playing the VL70m Turbo Theremin patch, as performed with Fat Raleigh.

New!  Where Gardens Grew (Fat Raleigh) - here is a clip from a live EVI solo I did with a band I sit in with every now and then - Fat Raleigh - out of NJ/NY.  I used a synth patch from the Patchman Turbo VL patch library for this solo and did the wild thing.

ROCKY HORROR SHOW!! Below are some clips from my recent run in the Rocky Horror Show at Villager's Theatre in Somerset.  These clips illustrate how you can fit a wind controller into the musical theatre setting. Unlike my normal gig, theatre work dictates that you take the role of a supporting player rather than a soloing instrument, and these clips will demonstrate that concept to a certain extent.  In this case, the production couldn't afford both a horn player and a synth player, so they opted for me instead and we fit the EVI to the score to make it work. The band consisted of drums (all electronic!), bass, piano, guitar and EVI for a total of 5 pit musicians.

New! Sweet Transvestite -  Most glam rock brass section and some organ, both done on the Roland Fantom.

New! Charles Atlas - I used the Roland Fantom on this with a custom horn section patch to give the part a "glam rock" sound.

New! Charles Atlas Reprise -  Same as above, with a trumpet trio patch added at the end for the wedding march.

New! Eddie Lost His Teddy - For this I used a VL70m Turbo Alto Sax Patch.

New! I'm Going Home - This song required a soapy opera style organ sound, which I was able to program on the Roland Fantom to give it a churchy gospel feel. Please forgive the feedback in parts - actors and mics...sheeesh!

New! Rocky Horror Curtain Call - Straight organ lines using a B3 type organ patch I cobbled together before the run.

New! Time Warp Reprise - More balls out organ lines over the heavy guitar parts

BRASS EMULATIONS

Foray Into Flugel - This clip was recorded on 7-17-2004 at a gig in NJ.  It is a Flugel emulation using a Turbo VL70m.  I was quite happy with the result.  Let me know what you think.

Caravan Blend  This live clip is an example of how a windcontroller can blend with a real horn.  In this example, I am playing my EVI using a harmon mute VL patch with a real alto sax player. Not perfect by any means as I don't often play trumpet patches, and the model I used has some quirks I wasn't accustomed to, but still good enough for illustration purposes.

Footprints Blend  Here is another "blend" example, with the same instrumentation as the Caravan clip above.

Tromboney  Here is a trombone emulation I did at a live gig in New Jersey. Vl70m, or course.

Tromboney2  Yet another trombone emulation, using the Patchman Valve Trbn patch from the Turbo library.

Flugel-ish This is a kind of freeform fusion jazz thing we did at the jam session. On this I think I am using the Mangione flugel patch from the Turbo VL70m.  Sounds pretty good to me, so I think I may do more trumpet and flugel emulations in the future.

Trumpbone This is an attempt at a trombone-like sound using the VL70m. My error was that I went too high in some spots, so it ended up being a cross between a trombone and a trumpet. I'll have to remember to stay down lower! That's what happens when you play too many screeching sax emulations. At the beginning, I am mixing my trombone patch with a real sax and it sounds pretty good.

Windjammer  Here is a sectional piece I did on a tune call Windjammer using a Patchman Nanosynth Brass Patch.  Not bad.

HornSection  Here is an example of how I might do a horn section on the EVI. This patch uses one of the Patchman patches on the Nanosynth. I use a crisp mono style with lots of short hits interspersed with other phrases.

MIXED SOUND MODULE

Sax and Muted Trumpet  On this clip I am using a VL70m soprano patch and a Patchman muted trumpet patch on the Alesis Nanosynth. The muted trumpet is subtle so the VL soprano stands out, but if you listen you will hear both instruments.

More Sax -n-Mute  This is another sax and mute patch using the VL70m for the sax part and the Alesis Nanosynth for the muted trumpet part. I like this configuration -that is why I use it often at the jam.

Sax and Muted Trumpet 2 Using the same patch set-up as above.  I got mixed reviews on this combo - most liked it, but a few thought is was too clean sounding.

Tenor and Mute  This uses a VL70m Tenor Patch and a Patchman Muted Trumpet Patch on the Nanosynth (I like this combo for acid jazz, etc).

BOWED EMULATIONS

Pontyesque - Here is another clip I dug up which was recorded some time ago at the jam session using the "Bowed Lead" patch, which is a stock VL70m patch.

Violin  I used the RealViolin Patch on the VL70m. This is a pre Turbo Chip patch, but I really like it.  I may load it back into one of my six custom slots eventually, but right now I am learning the Turbo Chip violin patches.

BowedLead  I honestly cannot recall what VL70m patch I used for this one.  I was the 4th or 5th patch in the original custom bank. Called Anasyn or BowedLead.....a mystery now.  It has a nice ethereal quality which tranced the crowd out at the jam session.

Modified Syndia Patch  Here is a wacky solo I did on the VL1m using a modified SYNDIA patch from the original VL1m v2 Library.  The patch was modified by Otto Fajen and posted on the net so I checked it out.

WOODWIND EMULATIONS

Tune 88 - A recent recording of us doing Lorber's old "TUNE 88" tune from the 70's.

Always There - A clip from a new tune we just learned called "ALWAYS THERE" by Ronnie Laws. This is the first time we ever played it togother.

StreetSax - Here is a sax solo I did using the Turbo VL70m "Brecker Patch".

ChainSax - An example of non-solo ensemble playing, or "coloring" using the VL70m Turbo sax patch.

GoodTimeSax - Patchman's NY Alto Patch get put into action on this piece.

WorldSax - A bluesy sax solo, again using the VL70m with Turbo sax patches.

PreTurbo Soprano - This clip is quite large, so non-broadband users be warned (about 3 megs).  This is a early jam session recording of a soprano sax patch prior to my installation of the Patchman Turbo Chip.  Non-rehearsed and completely improvised.

DruggySoprano - Here is a very freefrom clip with me emulating the Soprano on the VL70m with my EVI.  Note the turntable work in the background.

Sopranojammer A new soprano sax emulation using a slightly more legato style, per the suggestion of sax player Bob Hunt.  Still need to work out some kinks in my phrasing.

Alto Saxy Here is an alto sax emulation I did at The Underpass jam in October of 2003, using a VL70m and a Patchman Turbo alto sax patch. Lacking the boehm key set-up on my EVI, sax emulations are tough because certain key systems lend themselves better to certain licks.  Nevertheless, I gave it a good try.

Windjammer Soprano  This is a soprano solo that I did in the same piece as above. This time I used Soprano patch on my VL70m (from the Patchman Turbochip).

Free Sax Yet another sax emulation using a Turbo VL70m (ok, I admit I am hooked).  This one starts out medium and then get kind of "free" near the end.

Ancient Flute Here is a better flute emulation using the Wetfone patch from the Patchman VL70m Turbochip Upgrade.

Sax Attack! Here is a new attempt at a sax emulation using the new Turbochip saxes. I should have applied more vibrato and more bending I think, but there are still some good moments.

Soprano Sax  Another Joshua Patch clip from the Yamaha VL70m.

NON-EMULATIVE

EWI Arp Patch This was recorded straight through the board at the jam session.  I am using Patchman Music's EWI ARP patch from the VL1m Library. I was shooting for what is called a "porno" sound (or "porno soundtrak"), which is a seventies inspired style of synth funk.  You will note that I got stuck a bit exploring a 2-note motif that I was playing around with....

More EWI Arp Funk  More EWI Arp fun.  This is one of my favorite Patchman patches for the VL1m

Even More EWI Arp Funk  Yep. More EWI Arp.  This and the last two clips (as well as the EWI Arp and Brecker Patch Clip below)  were actually extracted from the same single long jam session at The Underpass.

GhostWhistle  Here is an example of my non-emulative work.  This patch is from the beautiful sounding Yamaha FS1r.  This patch is rather understated, but the other musicians at the jam really liked it. It worked well with the poetry.  Give it a listen, though it is a bit long.

Ghostwhistle Part 2 Back by popular demand!  This is again from the fabulous Yamaha FS1R.  Note the "radio tuning" effect that I employed...

Brecker Patch  I used a Patchman "Brecker" patch on the VL1m, which is a polytonal patch.

AutoWah  This is my attempt at doing a simple funky "waka waka" type sound that you normally hear guitars players doing.  I used the Yamaha FS1r patch called "AutoWah" which is from the WX FS1r bank that was found on the net.  The Wah effect is built into the patch - I am not using a Wah Pedal.

MISCELLANEOUS

Voodoo Child Playing the Yamaha FS1r using the AutoWah patch (from the WX library- the "Waka Waka" sound). Another long clip but since there are two windsynth players, I thought I should make it long. Check out Ken's awesome bass playing!

Juicy This one feature Ken on WX playing bass via the Nord Micro modular again and me on EVI playing a synth patch from the VL70m.

Juicy Part 2  Now I am on bass using the VL70m (we switched mid-song) and Ken is ripping a Tenor sax solo (real sax).

EVI Bass It was night of the Windsynth bass players when no bass players showed up at the jam session.  Here is a sample of me playing bass on EVI. I have a little bass solo at the end. Overall, I am pretty happy with the result.  I am using a VL70m Turbo Bass patch.

BluesHarp Patch I am using the new Turbo VL chip BluesHarp patch from Patchman Music.  This clip is taken from a recording of a gig I did with the band "Bologneous Chunk".

Hammond B3 This is a modified B3 Patch from my Emu B3 Tone Wheel Organ Module.  I use breath to control the Leslie speed.  So far, everyone that I play with loves this module.

More Hammond  Here is a longer solo I did using my new Emu B3 module.  This was one of the first times I played this module live.
